Prevention of Water Penetration: Surface coatings create a physical barrier on the outer layer of the paper substrate, preventing water molecules from penetrating into the paper fibers. This barrier effectively blocks moisture ingress from external sources such as humidity, rain, or accidental spills.
Reduction of Water Vapor Transmission: In addition to repelling liquid water, surface coatings also hinder the passage of water vapor through the paper substrate. This is particularly important for sensitive items such as food, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, where exposure to moisture can lead to spoilage, degradation, or malfunction.
